Compromise: a winning strategy or something to be avoided at all costs?

Over the past two years, the Democrats have doubled down on moving further to the left, without really having a comprehensive agenda (or specific goals, like ending child poverty, enacting term limits, border security, etc.). They are appealing to their current supporters and like-minded people who haven't voted before. However, the have done nothing to reach out toward those in the middle (they may make some gains in the middle, but it will anti-Trump and not pro-Democrats). If the Democrats win the House through this strategy, they will continue with more of that same (and will continue to be wildly unpopular and unsuccessful (the status quo for both parties is that they do not achieve meaningful goals, which explains why their approval rating is so low).  More of the same will lead to greater division in the country and will energize the right once again. What if the Democrats actually made compromises, like pledging significant investment in boarder security and a pledge not to enact gun control on the federal level. Increase taxes on large businesses and lower them on small businesses. Yes, it is against the principals of your base, but it would instantly take away everything the Republicans campaign on, leaving them with nothing. It is a winning strategy, it recognizes that there are legitimate culture difference in different parts of the country, and is reasonable. The alternative is the continued Donald Trump revolution.

Perhaps the Democrats don't really want to win elections, perhaps they judge "winning" on how much money they raise. By moving to the left, they will raise more money by appealing strongly to those who are the most passionate, but those people can still only vote once.

The failure of both the Republican and Democratic parties to make compromises, achieve tangible goals, show sincere leadership, and separate themselves from special interests has doomed both parties. Will either party blink? I doubt it because those in charge of the parties don't want change, they want to maintain their own power and the current structures.
