Protest Climate Change Inaction

Today, Molly (and a bunch of her friends) will joins millions of kids, around the world, to protest climate change inaction. I'm proud Molly is interested in fighting for what she believes in. Long-term, items like Climate Change will effect the next generation more than the current one, but we should be all be concerned on their behalf.

There are many things about the science of climate change that give credibility to disbelievers. Perhaps the greatest are the incorrect warnings of a small minority of scientists in the pasts. There were scientists in the 1950s, 1970s, and 1990s, who all said that climate change is going to cause massive damage in the following decade (which is has not). Other scientists have been wrong about other issues, as well.  And generally, the science is complicated and goes against some generally basic intuition.

However, to believe that Climate Change (caused by humans) is not happening you would have to believe in the greatest world-wide conspiracy in history. 195 countries have signed the Paris Agreement. Each country did their own research, has their own scientist, and their own reasons to accept or reject this. Why would all of these countries lie about climate change? Who would have possibly be behind such a conspiracy?

It is true that adjusting to a more carbon-neutral world is not easy. It will be inconvenient and expensive. Economies may suffer and taxes may increase. Politicians will lose short-term leverage to see a long-term gain (but they won't be around when that gain comes). It is hard to really know what the impact of global warming will be in a decade, but it won't be something good. As we wait longer, the cost to adjust our policies and infrastructures will only increase.

(There is something inherit in some people that are just to "believe" or "disbelievers" based on just faith. A faith that doesn't need to be logical and can never be changed. History has shown this tendency to be of those powerful ways to control people (for both good and bad).
