Missed Opportunities and Compassionate Conservatives

The biggest missed opportunity is this election wasn't John Kerry's chance to say that he would have voted against the war, or Bush's inability to come up with a good plan for Iraq. The biggest missed opportunity was by Laura Bush. She could have won the election (and done the right thing) if only she has shown some genuine compassion.

Remember last week, when a woman snuck into a speech by Laura. The woman's son was killed in Iraq and she wore a shirt that said, "George Bush killed my son". After she started to protest, she was thrown out by security and ended up being handcuffed and arrested. Now imagine if this would have happened...

As the woman is being dragged out the building, Laura steps to the microphone, "Get your hands of her, let her go!" the first lady demands. Than she invites the woman onto the stage to tell her story. After the woman speaks of how her son died for no reason and it is the President's fault, Laura would respond, "I am so sorry for your loss, war is a terrible thing and I can't imagine the pain you are in. I wish so very much that your son was alive, I know what it is like to love your children more than anything else in the world. But your son died with honor, defending his country and fighting for the liberty of those who would be persecuted. Your son was there for this country and this country, and I will be there for you. I'm so sorry." Tears and hugs follow. Of course, Laura would have to be sincere, but how could she not, how could you not feel genuine compassion for a woman who lost her son. And, of course, showing compassion and letting the woman speak is the right, moral thing to do, regardless of any election. Nevertheless, is Laura tries to reach out the woman, George Bush goes up at least 15 points in the polls. Bush has spent $200,000,000 on his campaign, but it would have been five minutes of honest compassion by the first lady that would have won the election.

(ps, If Karl Rove reads this blog and finds a woman whose son had died and get her to repeat the same thing, just so someone connected with Bush can fake some compassion, I will be more than displeased.)
