When the Supreme Court rules, they often struggle to understand the depth and meanings in some of the words or phrases in the Constitution. However, the Founders provided very clear language as to what they were trying to accomplish from a vision standpoint. Although not the law, the Preamble provides critical guidance that should be the first reference for any court ruling. "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." Specifically, the word "Justice". It is the very first thing they wanted to establish. If adult stem cells lead to a breakthrough in ten years, than those who opposed embryonic stem cells will say, "See, we did and didn't have to kill embryos. Now we want to stop funding for hospitals that perform abortions (even to save the mother's life), we want to ban anti-god publications and websites, we want to directly fund more churches, etc.). Of course, embryonic stems cells might have led to the breakthrough in only five and saved countless lives, but we would never know.
If the wrong way is the only way of proving something, than the right way will never be discovered.
Thanks again for your post. By the way, I checked out the Impact Lab, and it is a very interesting site, although I was more compelled by the DaVinci Institute. The future is certainly full of amazing possibilities, both for progress, but also for many possible negative technologies and ideas.
