Random Thoughts of Random Things

  • The avenue of the first breakthrough from stem cells (i.e. adult or embryonic) will have significant political and social consequences.
  • Who is buying all of these houses for $700,000. The middle class is not growing, neither is the upper class (in terms of number of people). Don’t they have to pay the mortgage?
  • Will hard-core atheists ever organize themselves into a proactive, evangelical cult?
  • The NBA just agrees to ban players from being drafted unless they are 19 years old. How is this legal? The current perception is that 18-year-old stars will go to collage for at least a year, but I think they will go where the money is. Watch for prep stars to sign million dollar, short-term contracts in Europe.
  • Oil is at $60/barrel and there is no crisis. Hydrogen cars are not necessary, there are already prototype electric cars that get 500 miles to the gallon.
  • Check this out, “Avida is an auto-adaptive genetic system designed primarily for use as a platform in Digital or Artificial Life research. In lay terms, Avida is a digital world in which simple computer programs mutate and evolve.” I read an article on this and it shows how artificial biology can “evolve” into significantly complex digital organisms. This contradicts one (among many) argument by creationists that the evolution can’t explain how people develop complex features, such as eyes.
  • Lindy and I have a new phone number (the old one is gone).
  • I added new pictures and a supercool slideshow to the Molly website.
  • I am functioning surprising well considering I get up for at least 90 minutes in the middle of every night.
  • Molly is perfect. Perfect I say!

You can afford a house of 700k if you don't have to put anything down. Also knows as "Interest Only" mortgages. This is actually just an "option to sell" in stock parlance. You pay for the right to sell the house in the future. It has been great for people because the value of the houses has been increasing. If they decrease it will be a problem.

Also, Some mortgage companies are offering 40 year mortgages which will lower the monthly payment.

In Japan, I have been told, they have 100 year mortgages. You pass the house and the mortgage over to your children. Buy a house in only 4 generations!

I think that our only option is not to debate the ‘origin of life’ but to search out alternative means of getting stem cells, i.e. research with adult stem cells and teratomas. There is always more than one way to skin a cat and if you can’t convince the other side of your argument then you must search for another way to get what you want. We are falling too far behind to continue debating this tired concept of when life is life.

Is this the actually ptolemy, I thought you were long dead. Hmmm, guess we learn new things everyday. Anyway...However, if this is you, than I felt obliged to respond (as that is my nature). Although I didn't clearly write my opinion about stem cells on my blog (as my post on it was only a tidbit), I feel that your strategy for achieving progress (if that is what you want) it significantly flawed. There are mobs of people throughout this country that will continue to debate the "origin of life" issue in order to make their faith-based views (i.e. life starts at conception) public policy. It is the responsibility of those who want to achieve progress to stand up to those who may have ulterior motives. If embryonic stems research is the most practical and reasonable method to garner scientific breakthroughs that that must be our avenue. I agree with you that we can not convince "the other side", but that does not mean that they get their way. In life we have many choices and people have difference concepts about the nature of humanity and of their spirit, but I am proud put myself into a group of people that choose to be guided by reason, logic, experimentation, and facts. Our concepts are based on science and our humanity is based on progress. I admit that I do not do enough to promote these ideas, but I try. I will not stop debating what is right according to the principals of progress or science. The 300 million people in the Unites States are having a problem understanding what their collective philosophy, and currently our representatives in government (who job it is to decide how to spend our tax money) are leaning towards the idea that progress comes not only in this world, but in the afterworld. Therefore, their goals reflect their need to progress in the Kingdom of Heaven (at the expense of "the land of the free"). I think that it is wrong.

If adult stem cells lead to a breakthrough in ten years, than those who opposed embryonic stem cells will say, "See, we did and didn't have to kill embryos. Now we want to stop funding for hospitals that perform abortions (even to save the mother's life), we want to ban anti-god publications and websites, we want to directly fund more churches, etc.). Of course, embryonic stems cells might have led to the breakthrough in only five and saved countless lives, but we would never know.

If the wrong way is the only way of proving something, than the right way will never be discovered.

Thanks again for your post. By the way, I checked out the Impact Lab, and it is a very interesting site, although I was more compelled by the DaVinci Institute. The future is certainly full of amazing possibilities, both for progress, but also for many possible negative technologies and ideas. I assume you have read it, but if not, I highly recommend "The Age of Spiritual Machines" by Ray Kurzweil (a remarkable look at the future of technology).

Shirley, hmmm, well the blog is black well because of…well, just randomness. Perhaps the uncertainty of quantum mechanics is behind the randomness, but I can’t say for sure. Either way, I didn’t give much thought into the aesthetics of the site, although maybe I should have. However, in reference to stem cells, you are missing the point. Many adults cannot get their body to make healthy adult stem cells (due to illnesses or injuries). Proper nutrition is not going to help. And adult stem cells are much harder to work with and less flexible (i.e. scientist have more difficulties controlling what kind of tissue they will regenerate into) than embryonic stem cells. However, with either type, the stem cell will have to be manipulated in a lab, as the body cannot do it on its own. The promise of either kind of stem cells in that they can be manipulated into creating cells, tissues, or organs that the body can not produce on its own. This includes spinal, blood, and brain cells. Scientists also postulate that under the right conditions they might be able to create artificial organs, which would probably be a revolutionary move forward for the medical community.

Shirley, after visiting you site, I see that you cell vitamin supplements; perhaps you opinion is clouded by desire to sell product. Let'not mix science with business.
